Forged by Conan's father- it was a formidable symbol for the young Conan- used to teach him that steel is the only thing you can trust in this world. However- the blade was stolen by the evil Thulsa Doom when he slew Conan's parents while raiding their village. Conan vowed revenge- hunting Thulsa Doom and his men- eventually recovering the shattered remnants of his father's sword after defeating Doom's champion. At Conan's final encounter with Thulsa Doom- he uses what remains of the sword to sever the sorcerer's head and discards the blade- his revenge complete.
